Maybe you’ve heard that tankless water heaters are extremely expensive. Or maybe you’ve heard that they offer limited features and struggle to keep up with hot water demands. The EcoSmart ECO27 Electric Tankless Water Heater is an appliance that proves all the critics wrong. Once it has been properly installed, it can save a homeowner up to 50% on their water heating costs immediately.

What initially attracted us to this unit was the self-modulating technology that is incorporated with a reasonably easy installation. It does require 2,700 kilowatts and 240 volts, so you’ll need to have 3×40 breakers available for the 112.5 maximum power draw. This combination gives you a strong flow of hot water that remains constant and available on-demand.

What Are the Features of the EcoSmart ECO27?

Outside of its ability to self-modulate, we really appreciated how this electric tankless water heater puts control into the hands of the user. It offers a panel which gives users access to digital temperature controls. Instead of spinning a dial and hoping for the best, you have 1-degree precision over the temperature of your water at the faucet or fixture.

It has also been designed with stainless steel and copper components, which promotes a greater efficiency for the unit during periods of long-term use. We found it to be a compact, efficient, and durable system thanks to these design benefits.

Here is what you can expect at your home if you decide that the ECO27 is the best tankless water heater to meet your needs.

  • With an inlet temperature of 37F-47F, this water heater can handle 2.7-3.2 gallons per minute when heating water to 105F.
  • For inlet temperatures of 52F-62F, you can expect 3.5-4.3 GPM when heating water to 105F.
  • In warmer climates with inlet temperatures between 67F-77F, this model is rated to provide a GPM of 4.9-6.6.

The EcoSmart ECO27 and Our Observations

This is a good mid-range tankless water heater for homes that live in moderate climates. If you live in colder climates, this GPM ratings may be a little underpowered to meet the full needs of an entire home.

There is a remote control that allows you to adjust the flow temperatures of the water heater and it works from virtually anywhere in the house. We’d highly recommend taking advantage of this equipment upgrade.

If you own an older home, this specific model may not be well-suited for your situation. It depends on the actual wiring that has been done with the home and what your amperage connection to the grid happens to be. Homes that are dealing with a 60-amp connection and one 240v circuit already installed will not fully support a tankless water heater like this one. The end result would be lukewarm water at best – and probably with some light flickering issues as well.

If your home can support this equipment and you live in a somewhat warmer climate, then you will find the EcoSmart ECO27 Electric Tankless Water Heater is a simple, but effective way to get the hot water you need. It earns our recommendation with the noted exceptions.
